Document Scanner Reviews Archives

You might not want a bulky desktop document scanner. A personal scanner is much more convenient for small home offices. But will it work quickly enough to be worth the purchase? Let’s take a look at these two models to see which one meets your needs.

Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300i Mobile Document Scanner

Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300i

Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300i

Let’s see if the ScanSnap S1300i fits on your desk and into your routine. It weighs less than 5 pounds and measures 11.2 x 3.9 x 3 inches in size. Once you open up the top panel, it reveals a feeder tray. It can scan up to 12 two-sided pages per minute in auto mode, although its ADF (automatic document feeder) can only hold 10 pages at a time.

The S1300i has automatic paper size and color detection, plus it performs cropping and de-skewing automatically. You can also set it to eliminate blank pages. Its top resolutions are 600 dpi for color scans, and 1200 dpi for grayscale, so it’s possible to create digital reproductions of very high quality. Unfortunately, the ScanSnap can only process one page per minute at the highest resolution.

As you scan, you can send the digital images to a variety of cloud services like Dropbox, Saleforce, Google Docs, and Evernote.

It plugs into your Windows or Mac computer with a USB cable that’s compatible with both 1.1 and 2.0 USB ports. The USB cable both powers the scanner and allows you to transfer files. You won’t need the latest tech to make this scanner work for you. In fact, once you stack the pages in the feeder, all you need to do is press the blue button to begin.

The software bundled with the ScanSnap includes a variety of programs that help you organize and edit your scans. It comes with optical character recognition program ABBYY FineReader, ScanSnap Organizer, CardMinder for Windows, and Cardiris for Mac.

More features of the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300i mobile document scanner:

  • Covered by 1-year limited warranty

Canon imageFORMULA P-215 Scan-tini Personal Document Scanner

Canon imageFORMULA P-215

Canon imageFORMULA P-215

The Canon imageFORMULA P-215 Scan-tini is even smaller and lighter than Fujitsu’s ScanSnap S1300i. It weighs just 2.2 pounds and measures only 1.6” tall by 11.2” wide and 3.7” thick. Open the top panel and you’ll see a convenient feeder tray with support for letter or legal-size papers. The tray can hold up to 20 pages at a time.

If you choose to scan color documents, you can process up to 10 pages per minute at 200 dpi. Or you can do up to 15 pages per minute in grayscale at 300 dpi. But should you prefer high resolution clarity, set it to scan at 600 dpi.

The scanner comes with programs like PageManager (for Mac) and Evernote to help you manage and share what you scan. The Scan-tini can also handle items like business cards and ID like driver licenses. With the included Presto! BizCard software, you can quickly organize contacts, too.

But should you be away from your own laptop, you can still plug and play, even on a computer at a business center in a hotel. The P-215 scanner has CaptureOnTouch Lite software that launches when you connect the device with the USB cable. And this program will let you scan without installing other software or drivers. Plus, you can send digital documents to the cloud to collaborate with Google Docs or Microsoft SharePoint.

But the P-215 also comes with TWAIN Drivers so you can launch a scan from inside another program like Word. It’s pre-configurable for repetitive jobs, too. In fact, it’s built to stand up to 500 scans per day.

More features of the Canon imageFORMULA P-215 personal document scanner:

  • ENERGY STAR and RoHS certified
  • 24-bit color or 8-bit grayscale
  • Uses CMOS sensor with RGB LED light
  • Compatible with USB 2.0 and 3.0

Recommendation

If you want the smallest and lightest personal document scanner, choose the Canon imageFORMULA P-215. It has a larger feeder tray, plus it’s designed for true mobility. If you don’t have your own computer handy, you can still use the built-in software without installing anything on another PC.

Otherwise, the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300i might be just what you want for a home office. It’s compact and speedy.

If you need to scan and import lots of documents, you need an ADF scanner. You can simply stack the pages in the tray and set it to work automatically. Fujitsu makes two desktop scanners that seem pretty similar at first glance, but they have an essential difference. Let’s see which one will be the best for your needs.

Fujitsu Fi-6130 Document Scanner

Fujitsu Fi-6130

Fujitsu Fi-6130

The Fujitsu Fi-6130 has been a popular document scanner since it first appeared a few years ago. Time has since proven it to be a valuable addition to an innumerable number of offices around the world. If you only need to scan text documents, this may be the quickest and least expensive choice for you.

Why is it a best seller? For one, it’s quite fast. It can duplex scan up to 80 pages per minute in monochrome or grayscale. That means you can import 40 pages with text and images on both sides in just 60 seconds. It can also handle up to 60 images per minute in color. And that’s with a resolution of 300dpi.

The automatic document feeder tray holds up to 50 pages at a time so you don’t need to ever feed them one at a time. Should you wish to scan business cards, the Fi-6130 can do that as well.

The feeder allows any document size from 2×3 inches (A8) up to legal size paper (8.5×14). As you import, make use of the Fi-6130’s software to manage your digital documents. It comes bundled with ScandAll PRO, Adobe Acrobat, and a trial of QuickScan Pro, plus it has TWAIN drivers. Those drivers allow you to initiate a scan from inside another program like Word. You can also network the scanner with Microsoft’s SharePoint.

More features of the Fujitsu Fi6130 Sheetfed Scanner:

  • ENERGY STAR and RoHS certified
  • If the scanner is experiencing heavy use, it’s recommended to maintain it daily with Fujitsu’s wipes and scanner cleaning paper

Fujitsu fi-6130Z Sheetfed Scanner – 600 dpi Optical

Fujitsu fi-6130Z

Fujitsu fi-6130Z

If you thought that the Fi-6130 sounded good, but you wanted a little higher resolution, you may prefer the Fujitsu Fi-6130Z. It offers up to 600dpi and 24-bit color for more detailed images and even crisper text reproduction. But you can also reduce the resolution and still achieve the same speed of the Fi-6130 scanner above.

The higher scanning resolution doesn’t come at the sacrifice of speed as long as you don’t need the 600dpi all the time. The Fi-6130Z is just as fast if you set it to the same 300dpi as the 6130. For example, the automatic document feeder can pull in up to 30 two-sided pages per minute for color scans with images.

The size limitations remain the same as they are with the Fi-6130. The Fi-6130Z holds up to 50 pages of letter or legal size paper at a time, but it can also scan business cards as small as 2×3 inches. And Fujitsu built this scanner to manage up to 4,000 pages a day. You’ll be hard-pressed to overwork it.

Along with TWAIN drivers, the Fi-6130Z comes with software like Kofax VRS Professional, ScandAll PRO, ABBYY FineReader, a trial of QuickScan Pro, and Adobe Reader. It’s compatible with Microsoft’s SharePoint, too.

There’s just one last note regarding the cleaning and maintenance of Fujitsu’s ADF scanners. They recommend not using compressed air to blow dust and paper debris out of the device. This is because it may force dust inside the scanner, which could start a fire. They also warn about avoiding static electricity, too. Instead, check out their selection of cleaning paper and wipes designed for the Fi-6130 and Fi-6130Z. These items can be used daily to keep your scanners in top condition.

More features of the Fujitsu Fi-6130Z Sheetfed Scanner:

  • ENERGY STAR and RoHS certified

Recommendation

If you’re in the market for a fast ADF scanner, both of these models fit the bill. The main difference is the resolution.

If you need 600dpi in grayscale or color, get the Fi-6130Z. Using the higher resolution will be a little slower, but you can place up to 50 pages in the feeder at a time and walk away while it works. Otherwise, both scanners can handle up to 60 pages per minute in 300dpi in color or grayscale.

It’s a close race between Canon and Fujitsu. Both offer compact desktop scanners that help you organize receipts, business cards, and other documents. Let’s examine these two models to see which will be the best for your home or small office.

Canon imageFormula DR-C225 Document Scanner

Canon imageFormula DR-C225

Canon imageFormula DR-C225

The Canon imageFormula DR-C225 is very fast at scanning—up to 25 text pages or 50 images per minute. It can scan both sides of a document, then convert it to either an image pdf or a searchable pdf file.

In its set of bundled programs, you’ll find both Nuance PaperPort and OmniPage. The first one helps you manage the documents you create from scans, and the second one provides OCR, optical character recognition. The OCR program is very accurate, even on non-traditional fonts, according to online reviewers who tested it with the DR-C225.

Although this Canon scanner doesn’t have Wi-Fi to send scans to a mobile device, it does have an option to attach them to an email. If you want Wi-Fi capability, check out the Fujitsu Scansnap described below.

Once you unpack the Canon DR0C225, you’ll see that it won’t take up much space on your desk. It measures less than a foot wide and just 6.1 inches thick. You can place it flush with a wall since it feeds from the top, and you won’t need to flip pages since it reads both sides of a paper.

If you want to launch a scan from inside an application like a word processor, the Canon scanner comes with TWAIN drivers for both Mac and Windows. This is something the Fujitsu lacks. And the included CaptureOnTouch program makes it easy to set up frequent scanning jobs that forward your scans to Dropbox, Evernote, and other cloud services.

Just imagine how easy it will be to create electronic copies of photos and forms, or import contacts from business cards. Even if you need to scan a legal-size contract, there’s no problem. The Canon DR-C225 can handle documents up to 118 inches long or pages that measure 11 by 17 inches in size.

More features of the Canon Imageformula DR C225:

  • Energy Star certified

Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500 Sheetfed Scanner – 600 dpi Optical

Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500

Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500

Like the Canon DR-C225, the Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500 works with both Windows and Mac computers. But it has a convenient Wi-Fi feature that lets it also send scans to iOS and Android devices like smartphones and tablets. In fact, you can use the scanner’s Wi-Fi to communicate directly with a mobile device without using a computer at all.

If you connect it to your PC by way of its included USB 3.0 cable, or over Wi-Fi, you can also send documents to Google Docs, Dropbox, Salesforce, and other online services.

Users and reviewers who tested both the Canon DR-C225 and the Fujitsu iX500 say that they are equally fast. They can both handle up to 25 pages of text or 50 images per minute. The only difference is that the Fujitsu ScanSnap can hold up to 50 pages at once, while the Canon holds only 30 at a time.

Instead of a TWAIN driver that lets you start a scan by requesting it from inside another program, like Photoshop, you’ll need to scan the document first, then send it to the program. And the included software is a little different from what comes with the Canon. For example, Fujitsu uses Abbyy FineReader for OCR. But this program also does a fine job creating searchable pdf files from non-traditional fonts.

More features of the Fujitsu Scansnap IX500:

  • Measures 6.6 inches thick by 11.5 inches long

Recommendation

Both of these compact desktop scanners are very fast and very good at what they do. They both get high ratings from pro reviewers and customers. It’s difficult to choose between them based on their scanning abilities.

Instead, you might find that you prefer a scanner that has built-in Wi-Fi like the Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500. It can scan directly to mobile devices without using a computer. But you won’t be able to initiate a scan from inside another program.

On the other hand, if you don’t mind needing a computer to use your scanner, the Canon imageFormula DR-C225 comes with TWAIN drivers. That means you can start a scan from inside another program, like Photoshop or Word. This option will save you time.
