If you’ve never enjoyed how fresh indoor air can be, you’ve never used an air purifier. The AirGenius purifiers work in three stages. The air is drawn into the tower and hits the pre-filter first. There are two different kinds of pre-filters to choose from: a washable one, and a replaceable one. The replaceable one removes more odors and must be changed every three months. The permanent one can be washed with just tap water, or water with a little bit of dish detergent, if needed. Only one pre-filter at a time fits inside the AirGenius, so you have to choose which to use.

The air passes then through the second stage which is another washable filter that doesn’t have to be replaced. The final stage is an electronic ionizer. Honeywell says the purifier removes up to 99.9% of microscopic particles from the air. On the downside, there is no HEPA filter. But on the bright side, most users have reported that the AirGenius 4 banishes strong odors and relieves allergy-sufferers. It’s powerful enough to handle large rooms, and can oscillate to circulate even more air volume. It’s also a lot quieter than larger HEPA units and even the earlier Honeywell models. It has a Sleep setting for virtually silent operation.

For such a powerful filtration system it only uses the same amount of electricity as a single light bulb. It has a shutdown timer and pleasant accent lighting that works as a night light. Another handy feature on the AirGenius is the check filters reminder light.

If you’re concerned about the AirGenius putting ozone into your air, don’t worry. The US government standard for safety requires less than 50 parts per billion, and the AirGenius complies with that.

The AirGenius 5 is like the AirGenius 4 with two upgrades. It has touchscreen controls and a germ reduction setting. The touchscreen controls are nice, but they aren’t the biggest selling point. We care more about germs.

So how does an air purifier reduce germs? This setting moves air more slowly so germs like viruses and bacteria get stuck in the filter and don’t circulate around the house. The only downside is that this is not a HEPA filter.

With germ reduction, this means that instead of four air speed settings, the 5 has five: General (the default), Sleep (very quiet), Allergen, Germ, and Max (the highest, fastest setting). Max works well when there’s been someone smoking, or there’s strong food odors, or a lot of dust. If it’s pollen season for you, try the Allergen setting to capture the most plant particles from the air.

Like the AirGenius 4, the 5 offers accent lighting, a filter check reminder light, and a shutdown timer. It uses very little electricity; about as much as a light bulb. Most users’ reviews show that they are pleased with its silent operation and are glad to be able to wash and reuse the filters to save money.

Recommendation

Unless you must have a touchscreen, the main difference between these two systems is the Germ Reduction setting available on the AirGenius 5.

If you want to reduce or eliminate odors, smoke, and allergens, the AirGenius 4 will be a big help to you. It does not have a touchscreen.

If you want to try reducing germs in your home, get the AirGenius 5. It can do all the that other purifier can do, plus it has this setting to cut back on colds and flu.
